When a prostate cancer is diagnosed, sometimes the doctor orders an MRI to check if the disease has extended beyond the prostate. An MRI is a technique that shows precise images of many regions of the body.

It does not use X rays. Like an ultrasound, a probe in used. This probe is introduced through the anus inside the rectum. AN MRI is contra indicated in patients with a pacemaker, or metallic parts in their bodies.
